Retire the "Slider"
By Ian Townsend
The homepage carousel has become an icon on the vast majority of website over the years, but numerous studies show they simply do not help conversions. In fact, they may actually hurt them, plus cost add cost to the store owner. Despite all this, every client wants one, and when I inform them that I no longer use them in design, most are surprised. Take a look at target.com, victoriassecret.com, & bestbuy.com, do you see a slider taking up the prime real estate? Nope, but I bet you do see one of the 4 alternatives Jon MacDonald write about on studio.uxpin.com. To sum it up, instead of a carousel, try to:
- Highlight your top products
- Offer easy access to top content
- Combine top content and top products
- Focus on your current promotion
